Kids Have a Field Day with 'Cats

Area children play with student-athletes and learn the fundamentals

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Almost 200 Evanston children visited Northwestern University Oct. 5 to spend a day with student-athletes on Wildcat turf.

Children from Family Focus, the McGaw YMCA and the Youth Organization Umbrella (Y.O.U.) were invited to take part in the 15th annual Field Day where they had fun learning the fundamentals of all 19 Northwestern varsity sports including fencing, golf, football and softball.

Student-athletes hosted stations for each sport that featured instruction and games. For example, children joined swimmers in a relay race at one station while trying a land-based version of the training game "Sharks and Minnows" at another. Fencers showed the basics of their sport with safe plastic weapons. And others learned proper tackling technique at the football station.

Field Day is hosted each year by Northwestern's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
