President Schapiro Hosts NU-Q Student Awards Event

Graduating students honored for outstanding work in and out of the classroom

DOHA, Qatar --- Benazir al-Munir Karim, senior valedictorian of the Class of 2012 at Northwestern University in Qatar, delivered a speech today at the awards recognition lunch hosted by President Morton Schapiro.

In the lead-up to this week’s historic first commencement, five NU-Q students were recognized with the Journalism Award, Communication Award, Liberal Arts Award, Student Leader Award and the Dean's Award. President Schapiro also saluted NU-Q's Latin honor students.

The awards lunch was one of a number of events this week in advance of the inaugural commencement ceremony May 9 where the University will graduate its first student class in a ceremony at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

Karim is a student orientation leader and journalism student who specializes in broadcast production and video journalism. She and 35 other students from 17 countries will receive Bachelor of Science degrees from the School of Communication or the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.
