Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day April 26

EVANSTON, Ill. --- “Electrocute a Pickle: Visualizing Molecules” and “Build Your Own Concrete Canoe & Figurine: See How a Bridge is Built” are only two of the 13 new hourlong workshops offered on the Evanston campus during Northwestern University’s 18th annual Take Our Daughters And Sons to Work Day.

The April 26 daylong event is open to the pre-teen and teenage relatives and friends of Northwestern staff and faculty members. About 350 girls and boys aged 8 to 16 are expected to participate in more than 30 career-related Evanston campus sessions and 14 Chicago campus workshops.

A three-session tour track reserved for older children will be offered for the first time on the University’s Chicago campus. It includes “Ready! Aim! Hired!” -- a 45-minute workshop introducing 13- to 16-year-olds to human resources and providing helpful tips on acing a job interview. “What Did You (Not) Say?” -- a session examining the importance of non-verbal communication -- also makes its debut in Chicago.

The day’s program will include a choice of three morning tours emphasizing science, technology and mathematics, followed by lunch with sponsors. Children will also have the opportunity to observe their Northwestern sponsors at work during a two-hour period of job shadowing. 

Established by the Ms. Foundation and now administered by the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day Foundation, the nationally recognized program -- which marks its 20th anniversary this year -- focuses its participants on the career options open to them.

All Northwestern Chicago campus child participants and their sponsors must be pre-registered by Thursday, April 19. Evanston campus participants must be pre-registered by Friday, April 20. (Note: There is no on-site registration on the morning of the program.)

April 26, Evanston campus check-in will be from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and Norris Aquatics Center at 2311 Campus Drive. Evanston sessions will run from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. and 12:10 to 1:10 p.m. 

Chicago campus check-in will be from 8 to 8:45 a.m. at Lurie Atrium, Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center, 303 E. Superior St. Sessions will run from 9 to 9:45 a.m., 10 to 10:45 a.m. and 11 to 11:45 a.m.
