Journalists and the public invited to ‘Reporting on Latinos’ panels May 5 and 6

Northwestern scholars and Latino reporters and editors will discuss the stories ‘we need and how to tell them’

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Latino contributions have shaped our nation's social, political and cultural life. Yet this diverse demographic remains in many ways misunderstood and underrepresented across many industries, including media. 

On May 5 and 6, a group of distinguished Latino journalists and editors working to tell stories that better capture the complexities of this group, will gather at Northwestern University for a series of four panel discussions. Topics will range from identifying reporting gaps to moving the conversation about Latinos forward.  

Symposium events will take place in Harris Hall, Room 108, located at 1881 Sheridan Road on the Evanston campus. Events are free and open to the public and reservations are required. RSVP online.

Friday, May 5

1 p.m. “Moving the Conversation Forward”
Moderated by Isvett Verde, the panel will include Jack Herrera, Texas Monthly; Graciela Mochkofsky, The New Yorker; Maye Primera, El Timpano; and Chuck Rocha, Latino Vote Podcast. 

3:15 p.m. “Harnessing the Power of Data”
Moderated by Benjamin Johnson, the panel will include Mike Matrid, Latino Vote Podcast; Jennifer Medina, The New York Times; Carlos Odio, Equis Labs; and Sabrina Rodriguez, The Washington Post.

6 p.m. Conversation with Congresswoman Delia Ramirez, 3rd District of Illinois. 

Saturday, May 6

9 a.m. “When Language Matters”
Moderated by Andrew Sandoval-Strausz, the panel will include Camila DeChalus, The Washington Post; Christian Pas, Vox; Paola Ramos, Vice News; and Laura Rodriguez, Chicago Tribune.

11:15 a.m. “A Seat at the Table”
Moderated by Geraldo Cadava, professor of history and Wender-Lewis Teaching and Research Professor at Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern, the panel will include Adreian Carrasquillo, national political reporter; Alma Campos, South Side Weekly; Fin Gómez, CBS News; and Stephania Taladrid, The New Yorker.

The two-day symposium is sponsored by Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, American Studies Program and Latina and Latino Studies Program at Northwestern University.
