The challenges facing Israel in a ‘very different Middle East’

Itamar Rabinovich, Israel’s former ambassador to the United States and former chief negotiator with Syria, will discuss the changing dynamics in the Middle East in a lecture on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m.

“The lecture will argue that Israel is facing a very different Middle East defined by the roles played by Iran and Turkey, by the U.S. departure and Russia’s enhanced position,” said Rabinovich, who also is president of the Israel Institute. “It will dwell in particular on Syria as the focal point for regional and international struggles.”

Ambassador Rabinovich also is professor emeritus of Middle Eastern history at Tel-Aviv University and was that university’s president from 1999 to 2007. He is the author of nine books on the history and politics of modern Israel and the Middle East, and a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution.

The lecture is free and open to the public. It will take place at the McCormick Foundation Center, First Floor Auditorium, 1870 Campus Drive, Evanston.
