‘Northwestern night at the Art Institute’ set for Oct. 24

The Art Institute of Chicago will open its doors to the Northwestern community from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24 for the fall “Northwestern University Night at the Art Institute.”

Students, faculty and staff with valid Wildcard IDs are invited to bring guests to the free event at 111 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. Check-in is at the Art Institute’s Modern Wing entrance on Monroe Street. Pre-registration is not required.

The event includes guided tours and activities inspired by this year’s One Book selection: “Hidden Figures.” There will be two first-come, first-served tours focused on black and African American women/womxn artists and the connection between science and art. Event guests also can enjoy a free light reception where participants can meet students from the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers and Girl Up! (The light reception happens throughout the event, while food/beverages last.)

Student docents from The Block Museum of Art will be stationed in the Contemporary Art galleries to engage visitors in conversations regarding the artwork.

The visit also coincides with the opening week of the Art Institute’s anticipated Andy Warhol exhibit.

Student Organizations & Activities (SOA) will sponsor free transportation from Evanston to and from the event. Participants can sign up to reserve complimentary CTA passes to the event or a seat on a charter school bus to return to the Evanston campus by completing the form at this link by noon on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Northwestern students unable to attend the event can visit the Art Institute free of charge year-round when they show a valid Wildcard at the ticket counter. More information about all of SOA’s museum partnerships can be found online.

The Art Institute’s permanent collection includes world-famous pieces by Claude Monet, Marc Chagall, Georgia O’Keeffe, Piet Mondrian, Rene Magritte and Vincent van Gogh, as well as galleries of decorative arts, photography, ancient/Byzantine art, African art, textiles, Asian art and miniatures.
