'Power and Privilege: A Call to Action' Series Begins Oct. 22

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Shirley M. Collado, dean of Middlebury College and associate professor of psychology, will visit Northwestern’s Evanston and Chicago campuses Oct. 22 and 23 to speak about building the skills required to embed diversity and inclusion in everything we do.

Collado is co-founder and co-chair of the Liberal Arts Diversity Officers (LADO), a national consortium that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion in support of academic excellence at liberal arts colleges.

Presented by Northwestern’s Women’s Center, Collado’s visit launches the 2013-14 “Power and Privilege: A Call to Action” series.

“The face of the campus is changing,” said Renée A. Redd, director of the Women’s Center. “This year’s freshmen class constitutes the largest non-majority class Northwestern University has ever admitted.“

Collado will deliver a keynote address on “Reimagining Inclusion: Connecting our Community through Collaboration and Innovation,” from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 for Evanston campus students, faculty and staff at McCormick Tribune Center Auditorium, 1870 Campus Drive. This event is free and is the only one of the series that is open to the general public. Collado also is a former executive vice president of The Posse Foundation, a nonprofit organization that identifies, recruits and trains student leaders from public high schools to form 10- to-12-member multicultural teams. Collado’s visit coincides with Northwestern’s first undergraduate class of Posse Scholars.

“Northwestern’s strategic plan emphasizes the importance of connecting the University to the community-at-large,” said Redd. “The Women’s Center embraces this goal.”
