Northwestern Sets 2013-2014 Costs

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Undergraduate tuition at Northwestern University will increase 4 percent to $45,120 for the 2013-2014 academic year from the current year’s $43,380, University officials announced today.          

Room and board rates will increase 4 percent to $13,862 from $13,329 for an undergraduate student living in a double room with a full meal plan option. Approximately 4,100 of Northwestern’s 8,400 undergraduate students live in University residence halls.

Total undergraduate tuition, fees, room and board at Northwestern will increase 4 percent to $59,389 in 2013-2014 from the current year’s $57,108.

The additional funds will help to meet students’ financial aid needs, which continue to increase at a more rapid rate than tuition. The University will provide upwards of $143 million in scholarships and grants to undergraduates in 2013-14, an increase of 6 percent from the current year. Financial aid for undergraduate students has increased by 81 percent from $79 million in 2005-2006. Approximately half of undergraduate students receive financial aid from the University.

The additional funds also will support investments in academic and student programs, in particular, investments in student advising, salary and benefit increases for Northwestern faculty and staff, fundraising support, and improvements in maintenance of the University’s facilities, student sustainability initiatives and information technology and enterprise systems. 

Northwestern will continue its policy of “need-blind” admission for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, in which a student’s ability to pay is not considered during the admission process.

The undergraduate student athletic fee will increase to $45 next year from $43 this year. The student activity fee will increase to $162 from $156. The student health fee remains at $200. 

For those students who purchase health insurance through the University, the student health insurance premium will increase to $3,067 from $2,842. 

Graduate school tuition also will increase by 4 percent to $45,120 next year. Tuition in the Law School will increase 3 percent. 

Tuition increases for the Feinberg School of Medicine and Kellogg School of Management are currently being reviewed.
