'A Minor Affair'

EVANSTON, Ill. --- “A Minor Affair” -- Northwestern University’s first dance minors concert -- will showcase original new dances, including a work performed to popular TV show theme songs.

Hosted by the University’s dance program and featuring the choreography of six undergraduate dance minors, the concert will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, in the Ballroom Theater of the Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, 10 Arts Circle Drive, on the University’s Evanston campus. The event is open to the public.

The one-night-only event allows this year’s dance minors to see their works performed before a live audience. The June 1 program represents modern, contemporary and dance theatre as well as improvised works.

Co-directed by School of Communication seniors Leah Martin and Cailey McCandless, the concert will feature the work of School of Communication and Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences dance minors Kayla Grayson, Mary Gulino, Lilly Liu, Martin, McCandless and Katherine Scott.

Northwestern majors and minors -- including Aric Barrow, Alex Frankenthal, Grayson, Gulino, Jean Kim, Liu, Martin, McCandless, Rachel Molinaro, Tessa Owens, Sophia Rafiqi, Jacinda Ratcliffe, Scott and Chelsea Yang -- will perform eight new works.

Concert highlights include a four-person dance by sophomore Scott, roughly based on her past year at Northwestern and performed to Jonsi’s 2010 single “Go Do.”

McCandless’ dance for a trio will be performed to a mash-up of popular television show theme songs.

Martin has created an improvised piece for three dancers and is remounting “Bubbly Bubbly,” part of her independent choreographic study from winter quarter.

Single tickets for “A Minor Affair” are $5 and can be purchased at the door prior to the June 1 concert.
